A couple of years ago my cousin asked me to come with me on a double date. Needless to say we were going to watch a movie. And gratuitous anecdote aside, in the end i was subjected to watching this masterpiece.
The general consensus about 2008 in cinema was The Dark Knight was one of (if not) the best films of the year. Sure there were capes and cowls and lavishly dressed antagonists but at its core it was a crime story. A classic detective film with the classic formula, although instead of a down on his luck private eye or a no nonsense police officer, we got Batman.
“Vox Populi, Vox Dei” C’mon we all know what that means, and while not necessarily true in all fronts, i.e. democracy. It does however, for all intents and purposes, do it’s job to some extent. And as with all things in the world, doing the right job can only work for so long. Case in point, the most likely biggest victim of this proverb, the entertainment industry. Specifically, the people the industry wants, nay, needs to serve.
Ok, lets get this out of the way first, these are the films that I HAVE SEEN, Avatar, Sherlock Holmes and other late releases for 2009 will not be in this list. WHY? Because I haven’t seen them.
